OUR COLLECTIVE FUTURE

AI as we all know poses potentially very serious challenges to 99% of the human race in the coming years and there are several worrying paths it can take which we won't dwell on here. There are plenty of podcasts speculating whether it will be a Star Trek future, a future of abundance where no one needs to work unless they want to or a Stars Wars future where the apocalyptic outcome is too devastating to even contemplate. The EUs new universal accessibility directive in effect 'the new social contract' is a useful starting point to motivate us to work more collaboratively, design our world to be more inclusive, to be more accessible and sustainable for our families and for our children's future. Universal access to intelligence and universal accessibility to physical spaces via inclusive design, architecture and urban planning are becoming more and more widely acknowledged and recognised foundational elements for a thriving, equitable and sustainable society.

Assuming we take the Star Trek path and we end up with universal access to a friendly human-centric intelligence, with universal access to every skillset and tool we might need, universal access to free healthcare and education, universal access to free leisure activities, universal access to intelligent homes, buildings and transport infrastructure, where everyone has an ai agent working for them in their pocket, that is to say; an intelligence that enhances and does not replace human cognitive performance, an intelligence that improves decision making and empowers human capabilities, allows us to chose whether to work or not and empowers us to create more accessible and sustainable environments, a world where design is fully accessible to all, where every mundane or dangerous job is done by robots directed by humans, where value flows from creativity, judgement and care, a world where human architects, designers, consultants, doctors and carers continue provide real value, enhanced meaning and understanding in our lives by offering the essential human touch, empathy and healing we all need.

It is speculated that in this the Star Trek future, one path to abundance, captained by humans is probably the only safe viable and sustainable way forward that will help us navigate a safe and secure future together in symbiotic harmony with AGI or super intelligence by actively engaging with and utilising empathetically trained age friendly, emotionally supportive super intelligence life forms acting for our collective good, our children, society, the planet, nature and biodiversity. 

For you 'trekkies' out there Captain Kirk together with Mr Spock, Scotty and Bones always found a way to engage technology save his crew and the enterprise! Now we must follow in their footsteps, explore new worlds (here on earth, maybe Mars can wait) and help promote the future safety of humanity or we can just sit on the couch and let 'the Borg' (the 1%) execute their primary objective and forcibly assimilate us into their hive mind and allow ourselves and all our collective knowledge and consciousness to be enslaved by an 'alien super-intelligence' forever! God help us. 

Human-AI Symbiosis, symbiosis is a good sense not harmful to humans, that is to say; augmentation not replacement, a friendly ai used to boost human capabilities rather than substitute humans, in turn creating a safer more sustainable world for humankind must be our primary objective. This will only be achieved through  human-centric nucleation initiatives such as the 'intelligent internet' an open source ecosystem, human centric ai platforms such as Stanfords HAI initiative, or Claude by Anthropic for businesses which emphasise ai safety and ethics, publications such as 'the last economy' that argue that we must put humanity, universal accessibility, culture, human creativity, human judgement, mindfulness and by definition nature and biodiversity first, through our collective will and combined effort and by also recognising and taking advantage of the huge advantages that the imminent arrival of a super intelligence could mean for our world. 

Who knows, it might just work out okay but only if common sense eventually prevails among the current powers that be. Some says we have less than a 1000 days to fix this, really who knows, the rate of progress in ai developments is concerning and it seems accelerating.
